During 2022, Vienna welcomes a wealth of new highlights when a fireworks of exceptional museums open or reopen. The permanent collection at Upper Belvedere features the works of some of the prominent artists of the movement. Meanwhile, the Belvedere 21, a temporary exhibition running through February 2023, Avant-Garde and The Contemporary, provides insight into art since the 1930s and highlights key artistic currents and tendencies. New to Vienna’s art scene, the Heidi Horten Collection will open in June and will house one of Europe’s leading private art collections, that of art patron Heidi Goëss-Horten. One of Europe’s largest collections — housed in a reimagination of the historic Stöckl Palais — is an impressive cross section of art history from early modernism to the present day. The Josephinum, containing the extensive collections of the Medical University of Vienna, will reopen this fall. The "House of Strauss" in Casino Zögernitz is a new music venue slated to open in autumn. Casino Zögernitz was established by Johann Strauss Sr. in 1837, and from 1880 forward, brothers Johann and Eduard Strauss gave numerous concerts there. Vienna Design Week, occurring from Sept. 16–25, is one of Europe’s most-important multidisciplinary design festivals. Vienna Contemporary (Sept. 8–11) is the city’s leading art fair to discover exciting newcomers, established galleries and carefully curated special exhibitions, with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe in the magnificent halls of Kursalon Vienna, located in the heart of the city.
During autumn, visitors can experience the Viennese art of living, including music, fine dining in the Brasserie Casino Zögernitz and an interactive exhibition bringing the Strauss dynasty to life. The Alte Post, a complex of buildings that served as the headquarters of the Austrian post office from 1850 to 2011, is being transformed into a massive mixed-use development. It will house Lebendiges Haus (Living House), a new contemporary museum featuring multidimensional media artwork, including an immersive 360-degree experience for all the senses. On Oct. 22, the mumok will start celebrating its 60th anniversary with a special exhibition. On Stage will explore theater and stage-based forms of performance in art since the 1960s. About a dozen new hotels are opening in Vienna in 2022. At the luxury end are The Leo Grand Hotel Vienna, Rosewood Vienna and the Almanac Vienna. Other notable openings include magdas Hotel im Stephanushaus, Radisson RED Vienna and BASSENA Wien Donaustadt.
