After the historic move of Barbados becoming a republic in November 2021, all eyes are on this Caribbean destination. Travellers can expect a certain flare in the air, with locals revelling in Bajan pride throughout 2022. The island recently became the only Caribbean nation with night-time horse racing at the newly illuminated racetrack in Garrison Savannah, near the capital of Bridgetown. The new Rascals Waterpark is the Caribbean’s largest aqua park. Barbados’ top attraction, Harrison’s Cave, renamed to Harrison’s Cave Eco Adventure, is being transformed into an activity centre for outdoor enthusiasts. Additions to the site include a free-swinging bridge across the gully, a zipline, a challenge course and an adventure zone. Go on a gastronomic adventure in the culinary capital of the Caribbean by visiting the new QP Bistro & Quattro Passi at The Cliff restaurants, where Michelin-starred Chef Antonio Mellino will bring the flavours of Italy to Barbados. For a local seafood delight, visit the world-renowned Oistins Fish Fry.

As the “birthplace of rum,” the island’s top rum producers are making major moves in sustainability. The West Indies Rum Distillery is the first distillery in the Caribbean to achieve the Bonsucro Chain of Custody certification, which recognizes responsible sourcing and trading. The distillery also installed a million-dollar solar energy plant as it makes efforts to reach carbon-neutrality by 2030. Mount Gay, the world’s oldest-running rum distillery, recently partnered with 4Ocean to support the removal of plastics from the ocean to help restore the world's oceans, which have played a huge part in the brand's history. Apes Hill Golf & Beach Club is under renovation and expected to open in November as the region’s most environmentally responsible golf course. This summer marks the return of the beloved Crop Over festival, complete with rich and colourful décor, celebrations and Bajan cuisine.
